The British rock band, known for their global hits and vibrant performances, started their world tour, named the ‘Music Of The Spheres’ World Tour, in Athens. Tickets sold out quickly when released in 2023. The tour has been breaking sales records and reinforcing Coldplay’s status as one of the most influential music acts worldwide.

On Friday night, tens of thousands of fans danced to Coldplay’s music at a spectacular concert held at the Olympic Stadium of Athens, touted by many as the music event of the year for Athens. The concert featured countless LED wristbands, colourful balloons shaped like the Earth as a nod to the band’s environmental strategy, and impressive sparklers.

Among the attendees were Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the main opposition SYRIZA leader Stefanos Kasselakis, who attended with his partner Tyler Macbeth.

Coldplay’s frontman, Chris Martin, addressed the crowd in perfect Greek, expressing the band’s gratitude for the opportunity to perform in Greece. “Music seems to be able to overcome divisions and bring people closer together,” he said on stage.

The Music of the Spheres World Tour, announced on 14 October 2021, supports Coldplay’s ninth studio album, Music of the Spheres, marking their return to live performances after the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike their previous record, Everyday Life (2019), Coldplay did not tour because they wanted to launch an environmentally friendly strategy. After developing a plan over two years with specialists, the band aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% compared to their Head Full of Dreams Tour (2016–17).

Coldplay’s concerts on this tour feature extensive use of pyrotechnics and confetti, similar to their Mylo Xyloto Tour (2011–12), but adapted to minimize their carbon footprint. They created the first mobile rechargeable show battery in collaboration with BMW and pledged to plant a tree for every ticket sold. The tour began at Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica on 18 March 2022 and will end at New Zealand’s Eden Park on 16 November 2024. The band has received widespread acclaim from critics for their musicianship, stage presence, joyfulness, and production value.

With a global cultural impact, the Music of the Spheres World Tour has surpassed $810.9 million in revenue from 7.66 million tickets across 132 dates, making it the third-highest-grossing and second-most attended tour of all time. Coldplay also broke several records at the venues they visited. Emissions from the concert run were reduced by 59%, leading Time to name Coldplay among the most influential climate action leaders on the planet. Similarly, Pollstar declared that they ushered in “a new era of sustainable touring.”

The table settings and décor carried the unmistakable Louis Vuitton signature, exuding elegance and refinement.

As the evening progressed, Louis Vuitton and Francesca Amfitheatrof warmly welcomed their distinguished guests, who enjoyed the dinner while gazing upon the deep blue sea and witnessing the breathtaking sunset. The Darc Awards are considered the “Oscars” of lighting worldwide.

On the 30th of September 2020, the new lighting of the Acropolis and its monuments, funded and supported by the Onassis Foundation, was unveiled to the world.

A committee of reputable lighting designers and architects every year decide which projects will be nominated for the Darc Awards. In 2020, 400 entries were submitted from 40 countries.

14,000 people voted and the lighting of the Acropolis won three prestigious awards.

“The work of lighting the Acropolis, which highlights with new, brilliant light the monuments of the Holy Rock, is the work of scientists, technicians and Eleftheria Deko and her collaborators. It was carried out in close cooperation with the competent services of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the executives of the Archaeological Service and received all the approvals required by the Archaeological Law,” said Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni.

“This work is now gaining international recognition by art and lighting experts worldwide. The light of the Acropolis travels around the world. Highlights the most important monument of Western Civilisation. It promotes our cultural heritage. Promotes Greece. Warm congratulations to Eleftheria Deko and her associates for their significant success that honours our country,” she added.

The Acropolis of Athens is one of the most important monuments of world culture.

A living symbol that has stood the test of time, and one of the most recognisable landmarks in the world.

On her part, Eleftheria Deko said of the win: “Oh wow! Thank you so much, I have to thank the voters and dedicate this award to my country and the Ancient Greeks. I need to thank my team, they are such great people and of course thank you to the Greek Ministry of Culture that trusted us and made it all possible. This is very moving, thank you!”
