There are few monograms more iconic – or recognisable – than that of Louis Vuitton. The letters, flowers and shapes first appeared in 1896 stamped across luggage and travel accessories as a way for Georges Vuitton to fend off counterfeit products. Fast forward 130 years and the monogram has become a marker of heritage, craftsmanship and style, and has taken many forms throughout the tenures of various creative directors.

Louis Vuitton turns back the clock for the monogram’s 130th anniversary, debuting three collections that reinterpret the monogram with a hint of modernity while staying firmly rooted in heritage. The Monogram Origine, VVN and Time Trunk collections each pay homage to a different facet of the Maison’s savior-faire – canvas, leather and trunk-making – and celebrate how the elements converge to form Louis Vuitton’s legacy.

he Time Trunk collection is inspired by the Maison’s trunk-making origins, wrapping signatures in a distressed trompe-l’oeil print

Monogram Origine was born from a dive into the archives. A 1908 client’s number register, a method that recorded which key number belonged to each client, serves as the inspiration for the vintage design; linen-cotton canvas and an array of pastel hues adorn five signature silhouettes – the Speedy, Noé, Alma, Neverfull and select trunks. The finishing touch is an exclusive nametag that doubles as a cardholder and is stamped with the founder’s own handwritten signature.

The VNN collection honours the Maison’s enduring commitment to authenticity and savoir-faire through the use of natural leather, a staple since 1880. The collection uses unprocessed vegetable-tanned cowhide, a material that will become even more personal to the user over time, deepening in character and colour as the years wear on. The VVN collection is one for the purists, with a detachable monogram nametag and monogrammed inner lining making each piece all the more classic. Rounding-out the celebratory collections is Time Trunk, which reinterprets Louis Vuitton’s icons with a worn-in trompe-l’oeil print that mimics traditional trunks and brings the history of the house to life. Shop now
