The Monogram Origine, VVN and Time Trunk collections each pay homage to a different facet of the Maison’s savior-faire – canvas, leather and trunk-making – and celebrate how the elements converge to form Louis Vuitton’s legacy.

Monogram Origine was born from a dive into the archives. A 1908 client’s number register, a method that recorded which key number belonged to each client, serves as the inspiration for the vintage design; linen-cotton canvas and an array of pastel hues adorn five signature silhouettes – the Speedy, Noé, Alma, Neverfull and select trunks. The finishing touch is an exclusive nametag that doubles as a cardholder and is stamped with the founder’s own handwritten signature.

The VNN collection honours the Maison’s enduring commitment to authenticity and savoir-faire through the use of natural leather, a staple since 1880. The collection uses unprocessed vegetable-tanned cowhide, a material that will become even more personal to the user over time, deepening in character and colour as the years wear on. The VVN collection is one for the purists, with a detachable monogram nametag and monogrammed inner lining making each piece all the more classic. The performance directed by the acclaimed Greek choreographer and director, Dimitris Papaionou, paid homage to the birth of Aphrodite, while the accompanying music was composed and performed live by the internationally renowned violinist Renaud Capuçon.

About halfway through the Spring/Summer 2023 Louis Vuitton womenswear show, a model emerged toting a child’s dollhouse reconfigured into a handbag. It was, of course, a witty and eye-catching accessory, of the kind Vuitton is well known for, but it also served to underline the tack Nicolas Ghesquière took for this particular outing. The cue was, actually, his collaboration with the artist Philippe Parreno – a sucker for a partnership with other artists, cinematographers and musicians in his work and who once stated “art is conversational. There is no art without conversation.” For Vuitton and Ghesquière, Parreno created a “monster flower”, a gargantuan alien bloom pulsing at the centre of the Vuitton set in the Cour Carrée of the Musée du Louvre, from which the models emerged as if exiting a spacecraft. The impression was exaggerated by the clothes they wore – Ghesquière at the height of experimentation, innovation and futurism.

Exaggeration, indeed, was the mood – influenced by Parreno’s massive flower and by their artistic conversation around the collaboration, Ghesquière blew up details on clothes to seem as if viewed through a magnifying glass, especially zippers, their pulls becoming palm-sized, and press-studs inflated to the size of teacups. That dollhouse seemed an indicator of this toying with proportion, between micro and macro, surreal tricks that extended to blown-up bows and belts and deliberately toy-like proportions. Of course, at Louis Vuitton, there was much game with accessories: locks and buckles became stand-alone bags, while Vuitton’s smallest of small leather goods – key holders and luggage tags, and micro-purses with chain-clasps designed to be suspended from belt loops – were massively overblown. There’s a play there not only with proportion but perception, taking Vuitton’s most accessible products – entry level, they call them – and making them the centrepieces of the show. They were also, of course, items we’re all familiar with, which meant that their painstaking re-working to maxi size was especially disconcerting. The everyday, made alien – like someone had spliced Vuitton’s DNA, and created a mutation.

Yet it wasn’t everything amped up to colossal scale. Ghesquière’s clothes were fitted close to the body, defining the silhouette with low-rise trousers, sleeveless tops, mini dresses. Many cleaved closer to the body than usual, even, making those XXL details seem even more incongruous. Rather than the models made doll-like, or the clothes seeming outscale, the effect was as if our view of the world as a whole had been warped, snippets of reality pulled out of context. There were a few trompe l’oeil printed suits, cross-hatched with belts, but the whole collection felt like it was about tricking the eye and scrambling the mind, virtual reality made actual reality. Ghesquière has professed an obsession with video games before – their influence could be seen here, writ large. No pun.

This collection also undoubtedly reflected the influence of the Internet on generations of fashion designers – or even the iPhone, come to think of it. Pinch-to-zoom means no detail is too small to grab our attention, even in a fashion show where, until recently, you could miss the small stuff designers sweat over while being overwhelmed by the bigger, bolder picture. Vuitton is a great example of that – Ghesquière has built elaborate sets and exported his wares to Japan and California in search of exceptional panoramas to backdrop them. But, sometimes, you may lose the finicky, obsessive-compulsive detail a designer like Ghesquière packs into ever buckle and stitch. This collection was a riposte to any attention spans that may be wavering at the end of fashion month. You couldn’t miss a thing here. The zooming had been done for us.

That’s all interesting because it’s what makes Ghesquière a modern designer. Not just that he creates clothes that look modern – he does, even when he’s looking back consciously at history, as he has for the past few seasons. In actual fact, his clothes are usually ahead of their time, predicting what other designers will become obsessed with seasons after him – which is no coincidence. But even more compelling is that Ghesquière is a modern designer in the way he designs, in the way he looks at the world. His eye is attuned to new ways of thinking and seeing – and that’s what this show was engineered to echo.

Then, in 2020, the Tambour Curve quite literally pushed the boundaries of timekeeping, with its titanium and Carbostratum® case; its surprisingly elongated convex curve, and its phenomenal flying tourbillon calibre, stamped with the prestigious Geneva Seal (Poinçon de Genève) – a perfect match between high-complication movement and bold creativity. In 2021, the Tambour Carpe Diem received the Audacity Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, while the Tambour Street won the Diver’s Watch Prize.

Over the years, the Tambour’s timeless and iconic stylistic signature has combined with all kinds of watches, from the more classic types to the most complex movements. Depending on the wearer’s wishes, it has been masculine, feminine, GMT, diver-friendly, and has even equipped itself with a flying tourbillon and a minute repeater, bearing witness to the high-end watchmaking expertise of Louis Vuitton’s artisans.

The limited edition of 200 pieces pays tribute to the original Tambour by reprising the iconic codes that made it an icon of watchmaking design.

The Tambour Twenty boasts the same unique and instantly recognisable case, a nod to the watch’s tambour component which, in English, is known as the “drum”. The timepiece stands out with its deep, flared shape, which gives it a robust and reliable feel. On its iconic 41.5 mm diameter case are the twelve letters that make up the name “Louis Vuitton” across the numbers and indexes, just like on the 2002 version. This collector’s edition also features a brown sun-brushed dial, along which the chronograph’s long yellow hand glides – a nod to the thread historically used in leatherwork. The two elegant sub-dials also make a comeback.

The Tambour Twenty, which is water-resistant to 100 metres, keeps time with a LV277 high-frequency movement based on the iconic Zenith El Primero, the first automatic chronograph ever. This movement with 22-carat gold rotor and 50 hours of power reserve is exact to the tenth of a second. A true collector’s item produced in only 200 models – as specified by its engraved caseback – the Tambour Twenty is also available with another iconic Louis Vuitton staple: a miniature trunk in Monogram canvas.

Abloh had made a practice of lookbook reveals for his LV pre-season lineups; there’s only a handful of other men’s brands in the habit of doing so. Pre-seasons, for him, provided a chance to extrapolate on the heritage label’s famous logo; and the sensibility of the clothes was more casual than on his runways, where he often focused on tailoring and silhouette building. But if his intentions during the pre-seasons were micro, their impact was inevitably macro. The pre-spring collection he showed a year ago was a showcase for his second collaboration with Nigo. When the Japanese streetwear pioneer was named artistic director of LVMH sister brand Kenzo in September, many saw Abloh’s hand in the hire.

According to the press notes circulated with these pictures, Abloh “conceived” the idea for this pre-spring lineup, and it was subsequently “carried out by the creative teams and collaborators with whom he continually worked at Louis Vuitton.” The collection looks of a piece with his previous pre-seasons here, emphasizing the house monogram and prioritizing playful off-duty sportswear over tailoring, though there are some neatly cut trim suits. The PR materials note its “coming-of-age theme” and go on to explain that the 43 looks are divided into two archetypes: the music student and the concert goer.

Music was Abloh’s abiding preoccupation, the source from which so many of his ideas, relationships, and influence flowed. The music student/concert goer distinctions are somewhat nebulous, but the clothes are unmissably Abloh-esque. Picking up on the angel wings of his posthumous fall show, butterfly intarsias decorate knits. The tie-dye that was one of his go-to motifs returns on denim and fleece. And there’s also a midlayer garment—which is what he called the distinctive harnesses modeled on the red carpet by Michael B. Jordan and Timothée Chalamet—only here it’s scaled way up. As for the logo, the bolded treatment looks like the puffy letters of graffiti.

As prolific and hard-working as Abloh was, there are likely brand icons to iterate on indefinitely. The really big question moving forward is just how Abloh’s successor, whenever they are named, will find their way through or around them to develop a language of their own. It won’t be easy. Last Friday, a Louis Vuitton and Nike “Air Force 1” by Virgil Abloh exhibition opened in New York, and next month nine editions of Abloh’s Louis Vuitton and Nike Air Force 1s will be released; they’ll top $2,000 retail and most are expected to sell via pre-order. Maybe this will put the challenge of living up to Abloh’s legacy in perspective: A size 9 Nike AF1 combining the LV monogram and damier check is on offer at the resale site Tradesy.
