Uncover the understated luxury of Korona Hotel in Oitylo—a hidden gem perched above the Mani coastline, where heritage stone houses meet contemporary design and the art of slow living

If you’ve ever found yourself squeezed among tourists in the pretty, but now crowded, streets of Limeni, in Peloponnese, wondering when it became so overrun, then this is your cue to escape somewhere more authentic. Just above the sparkling bay of Neo Oitylo, in the historic hills of Mani, lies the village of Oitylo—like something out of an old postcard, untouched by mass tourism and full of genuine charm.

The Sweet Relief of Escaping the Crowds—And Finding Paradise Above Them

Here, amidst stone-clad alleyways and timeworn towers, you’ll find Korona Boutique Hotel—not so much a hotel as a soulful collection of impeccably restored stone houses scattered through the village. Created with the seasoned touch of the Empiria Group—the masterminds behind iconic sanctuaries like Vedema Santorini and Cosme Paros —Korona is a masterclass in understated luxury and authentic Greek living.

A Stay That Feels Like Coming Home—If Your Home Were a Historic Mani Tower

My arrival was nothing short of cinematic. Picture this: a small group of friends, our luggage wheels clattering charmingly along the ancient kalderimi (the cobblestone path), winding our way to a traditional stone tower that would be our home for the weekend.

I was lucky enough to claim the suite with a dreamy private terrace—pro tip: if you’re not a fan of petite windows and the moody charm of a stone tower, request a suite that suits your style. But trust me, there’s something irresistibly romantic about waking up in a fortress of history.

Inside, the design is all about cozy minimalism. Think creamy linen textiles against cool stone walls, plush bedding that whispers luxury, and thoughtfully curated design accents—handcrafted ceramics, soft lighting, and a welcome basket brimming with local delicacies: tea mountain, lupin beans and lalagia . It’s that rare blend of authenticity and elegance that makes you exhale and think, Yes, this is how it should be.

Mornings of Mani Magic: Local Flavors and Timeless Rituals

Each morning unfolded like a scene from a nostalgic Greek film. In a neighboring courtyard, women from the village—masters of their culinary craft—gathered to prepare the traditional pan-fried travixti pie, alongside the irresistibly airy open cheese pie and the crispy lalaggia (Mani’s answer to the perfect doughnut). Add to this a spread of fresh fruits, golden-fried eggs, and cakes kissed by citrus zest, and you have a breakfast that feels less like a meal and more like a celebration.

The Art of Doing Absolutely Nothing—Perfected

Days at Korona aren’t measured by to-do lists but by moments. Reclining on the sun-dappled terrace with a glass of chilled Moschofilero wine in hand, a plate of fresh fruits within reach, and nothing but birdsong and the gentle rustle of the olive trees to keep you company—that’s the kind of luxury you didn’t know you craved.

On particularly languid afternoons, I wandered to the panoramic terrace of Korona’s other building. The view? A sweeping, cinematic masterpiece of craggy Mani cliffs plunging into the cobalt bay below. Time seems to stretch infinitely in moments like these—where the sun slowly dips behind the stone walls, and the air is thick with the scent of wild thyme and sea breeze.

A Culinary Revelation at Aspasia Restaurant

Of course, no journey through Mani’s cultural and sensory treasures would be complete without a life-changing dining experience at Aspasia Restaurant, another jewel in the Empiria Group’s crown. Nestled in the nearby village of Stavri, this restaurant is a true gastronomic destination

Here, celebrated chef Stavriani Zervakakou orchestrates a daily-changing menu that reads like a love letter to Mani’s rich culinary heritage. Think wild asparagus paired with delicate lamb sweetbreads, handmade petoura pasta enriched with seafood broth and a surprising hint of orange zest, and red shrimp so fresh they seem plucked straight from Poseidon’s pantry.

The setting? Pure magic. Dine under a canopy of stars on Aspasia’s panoramic terrace, with the rugged Mani landscape unfolding before you and a carefully curated selection of rare Greek wines enhancing every bite. For the truly curious, Chef Zervakakou even leads intimate foraging excursions, where you can gather wild herbs and edible treasures before returning to the kitchen to watch them transformed into dishes that taste like pure poetry.

A Farewell to Remember—But Never Goodbye

As we packed our bags—those same wheels clicking again along the kalderimi—I felt that familiar pang of bittersweet departure. But unlike the polished perfection of Greece’s more famous hotspots, Oitylo and the sanctuary of Korona Hotel stay with you. They linger in the heart, like a beautifully aged wine whose aftertaste surprises you long after the last sip.

So next time you dream of Greece, skip the crowded promenades and overbooked seaside tavernas. Head for the hills of Mani, where authentic luxury lives quietly, gracefully—and just a little bit off the beaten path.

It is a small settlement with few inhabitants, but it has one of the most beautiful beaches in the southern part of Laconia.

The fame Alypa has gained over the years is impressive, given that it is a small settlement with few inhabitants. But those who visit admire the small, pebbly beach with green-blue waters between the traditional Mani tower houses.

For this reason, Alypa is rightly considered one of the most beautiful parts of the southern part of the Laconic Gulf.

Alypa is 20 kilometres from Areopolis and 81 kilometres from Sparta. According to the 2011 census, there were only 43 permanent residents in the village that touches the foothills of Mount Sangria.

Alypa: The enchanting port of Mani

Historically, Alypa is connected to the village of Exo Nymfio (which is only 1 kilometre away) and, more broadly, to Oitylo. It was recognised as a distinct settlement in 1951 and was given the name Alipos.

In 1955, it was decided to call it Halikia, but was renamed again in 2001, taking its current identity. Before the formation of a complete road network in the wider area, the village functioned as a port thanks to its jetty, serving sea transport with Gythio.

Alypa has a very special charm and stands out for its typical Mani aesthetics, with some traditional tower houses reaching up to the coast—thus creating an amazing combination of the white pebbles and the exotic green-blue waters of the beach.

American director Paul Mazursky chose Alypa for the filming of Tempest (1982) and brought international fame and recognisable Hollywood figures, such as the Greek-born John Cassavetes, Susan Sarandon, and Gena Rowlands to the village.

For the same reason, it was chosen in 2003 for a Plomari ouzo advertisement.

Despite these glories, Alypa has been unaffected by mass tourism. Therefore, do not expect luxurious hospitality infrastructure or impressive beach bars when coming here.

If you’re looking for something more cosmopolitan, you’ll have to head to other locations in Mani. This particular village doesn’t even have hotels or guesthouses.

Of course, you can search for Airbnb accommodation, but otherwise, the settlement is suitable for a quiet day trip. You will combine swimming and eating before returning to your accommodation.

Just make sure you get there early because parking isn’t always easy.

The beach of Alypa stretches for about 250 metres. It is made up of white pebbles, which are quite coarse and can be difficult for children or the elderly—so it is good to bring special beach shoes.

Also, note that this is an unorganised beach, so you should arrive here with your umbrellas and mats. You can also sit on the rocks west of the beach.

It is definitely worth bringing a mask (or goggles) when going to the beach: Under the blue-green waters of the settlement, there is also an amazing seabed full of small fish, crabs, and starfish, which makes it perfect for underwater exploration.

Greece is well known for its thousands of beaches that are tourist magnets, bringing millions of travelers every year to the country; but what about its hidden gems, the coastlines that are almost empty?

The places no ordinary tourist knows in Greece

Visitors to Greece have always been amazed by the wild Mediterranean terrain made up of stunning blue waters, golden beaches, and amazing landscapes. However, this small and yet great land hides many secret places.

Most of the visitors of Greece will certainly know the islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Corfu, and Rhodes. However, very few are those who know the abundance of hidden destinations that offer a uniquely Greek and traditional experience.

From hidden beaches to entire islands, Greece has a wide range of options to offer to those who seek tranquility and calm during their summer vacations.

Here are some of these endless options:

Ravdoucha, Crete

The Cretan village of Ravdoucha is, according to many, one of the most traditional places in the solitary Rodopos Peninsula. Located on the western part of the island, 21 km from the city of Chania.

Ravdoucha is a small, beautiful village, counting a little more than 130 inhabitants, it is located on a rather elevated position, on top of a hill from where it is possible to admire a fantastic view of the Gulf of Kissamos, while there is a wonderful beach nearby.

Its name comes from the Greek term ravdi, closely related to the word ”ravdizo” (to flop something) which describes the winds affecting the area, normally ideal to practice snorkeling.

The village is still not famous for mass tourism, which confers the area a touch of peace and tranquility. Still, many Cretans adore visiting Ravdoucha and especially the unique shore. Here, high cliffs and rocks make it a perfect place for fishing.

Lipsi, South Aegean

The island of Lipsi (or Leipsoi) is a rather tiny and isolated island of the Dodecanese.

It is one of those perfect Aegean islands to visit in order to get away from stress and routine. Since there is no direct daily connection via mainland Greece, the closer options to get there would be from other Dodecanese islands such as Leros, Patmos, Rhodes, Kalymnos, and Kos.

Lipsi is a cluster of islets located in the southeastern Aegean. The collective name comes from the largest island of all, Lipsi, which is formed by landmasses joined by a narrow neck. Low hills and valleys, as well as a rocky coastline and several bays, are part of the landscape of Lipsi.

Cars and roads are not common on the island, therefore most of the action takes place along the pedestrian seafront promenade. A small fishing port and different tavernas can also be found, as well.

In the only town of the island named Chorio (which literally means ”Village;;), one can taste the famous octopus recipe of the island in one of the many ouzo taverns or fish restaurants available. At night, these venues turn into meeting places where people can to go for a drink and live music.

Alypa, Mani

Alypa is a hidden spot located in the Greek region of Mani, one of the three peninsulas of the Peloponnese, southern Greece. The region is famous for its shores and the greenish-blue crystal seas.

Alypa boasts a magnificent beach with crystal clear waters, a really inspiring place for a peaceful holiday.

Wild beauty, colorful landscapes, rough stones, and turquoise waters are the ingredients that sum up to create the ultimate holiday experience. The area of Alypa is literally hidden between the majestic villages of the Laconian Mani.

This unique seaport in Mani welcomes visitors with beaches made of crystal clear waters and pristine white pebbles. A small bay with a natural landscape of unique beauty, a bunch of taverns, and its relaxed atmosphere inspired John Cassavetes’ film, Tempest, as well as a famous commercial for a brand of ouzo.

The magic of nature is part of the Mani where every beach has a characteristic of its own. However, there is something unique about Alypa, where the greatness of nature becomes evident to the eyes of the visitor.

Lichades, Euboea

Lichades or also known as Lihadonisia, is an island complex located across from Kamena Vourla on the central Greek island of Euboea (Evia).

The complex consists of a total of seven islands and islets. The biggest of them is Manolia and it is the only one that had residents in the past.

The other six islets are Strongili, Mikri Strongili, Steno, Vagia, Vorias and Limani.

The biggest island, Manolia, has a beautiful beach and it is visited by a few tourists in the summer. Strongili is the second largest island and on top has a big lighthouse.

The seven islands are dotted with beaches created by volcanic inlets.

Often referred to as the “Maldives” of Greece, the islands emerged as a result of a massive earthquake thousands of years ago and volcanic activity during the Cenozoic century. Thought to have been named after the servant of the God Hercules, Lihas, the islands can be reached via boat excursions operating from the harbor of Kavos in Evia.

Donoussa, Cyclades

Donousa or Donussa is a small island on the southeast side of the Cyclades archipelago in Greece.

It lies just 10 miles north of the island of Amorgos and east of the largest Cycladic island, Naxos.

The area is only 13.75 square kilometers and it is comprised mainly of mountains, hills, rocks and some bushes.

The island has a diameter that is no longer than five kilometers (three miles) with the highest point being 363 meters (1190 ft). The island is populated by only 167 individuals, who proudly call this little rock ”home.”

Donoussa has a small harbor at Stavros, its main settlement, having ferry routes to Naxos and Amorgos. However, it is not connected directly to mainland Greece.

One of the rare luxuries of the island is that it has one ferry that can transfer its few lucky visitors to every undiscovered sandy beach with crystal exotic waters of the area.

Inspired by the wild and pure essence of Mani, Ariá Estate reflects a calming, respectful and attentive hospitality philosophy which is visible in every curated detail of a gracious stay: the skillfully designed Suites, the comfortable light filled indoor spaces, the mesmerizing landscape, the breathtaking sea views and glorious sunsets, the creative gastronomy and the luxurious Zen spa, are ideal for guests that cherish the privacy of authentic high living.

Unwind in unpretentious luxury

In an atmosphere of casual elegance, Ariá Estate Suites & Spa is the brand new 4 stars leading hotel in Mani, designed to offer the comfort of a private home, combined with exclusive, upscale hotel amenities and services. Created to inspire memorable experiences to our guests; Ariá Estate is a place to relax, unwind and rejuvenate, indulging in the unpretentious luxury and cultured blend of people, services and ambience

Awaken the senses and allow the light-filled landscape and the -invitingly close- magical blue waters of the Bay nourish your spirit… Find refuge and relaxation in the lavish Estate hideaways, enjoying romantic or family times in the privacy of worry-free leisure.

A welcoming hospitality heritage

“In Mani, our fatherland, we used to return every summer to enjoy our vacation in the pure warmth of a nonchalant place where only simple things mattered. Many times, we invited our friends to spend those precious moments with us, and we always needed more space. Then, during a family walk down the path from Areopoli to the sea, we reached the area where our ancestors used to grow their wheat and olive trees, and rested under the oak (ariá) trees; that place is called Hariá, and this was the perfect spot to create a unique place for our guests”.

Faithful to the spirit of a welcoming hospitality heritage, Ariá Estate Suites & Spa was created within a beautiful and protected landscape, infused by natural and archaeological traces –like the prehistoric cave of Apidima- that go back in time revealing a rich history of local narration. Brilliantly located on a hillside overlooking the sea and the Messinian Bay that stands between Limeni and the Diros Cave landmark, Ariá Estate Suites & Spa is honouring the pure and rugged beauty of Mani, providing a raven of relaxation and enjoyment.

Tradition & leading-edge architecture

Respecting the architectural tradition of Mani and featuring a sustainable character, we used natural materials, local stones and building techniques in dialogue with the unique landscape that surrounds the Estate. Every detail of the property reflects the calming local palette and embraces authentic customized design, creating a feeling of comfort and serenity.

The 16 luxurious sea view Suites, are built amphitheatrically in three unique property alignments, offering the privilege of undisturbed, birds-eye sea and romantic sunset views, as well as the protection of privacy. Each one of the Suites is a unique creative project with tailor-made design elements and personalized details, combined with high-end, contemporary luxurious features.

Underlining the singularity of Mani, we shaped an authentic living experience for our guests.

Surrounded by a beautiful landscape and breathtaking views, Tainaron Blue Retreat welcomes its guests offering excellent cuisine combined with impeccable service and warm hospitality.

Unwind and rejuvenate in the midst of nature with a glass of wine, enjoying the unobstructed view in one of the most exciting locations in Greece.

Tainaron Blue Retreat is housed in an early 19th-century stone tower that boasts stunning panoramic views of the southernmost slope of Taygetos mountain and the sea. Perfectly situated in an idyllic location, it is an ideal place to watch the magical sunset over the sea or witness the serene beauty of a new day dawning.

This traditional tower is a perfect example of the defensive architecture of the area. With their simple and austere beauty, the imposing towers of Mani resist the passage of time and offer a fascinating journey into the past. In times of conflict, they served to control and repel hostile attacks, while in times of peace and prosperity they were used as residential places and courtyards.

During the conversion of this three-story tower into a guest house we encountered considerable difficulties. We had to adapt to the specific characteristics of the architecture of Mani and at the same time ensure that the interior spaces keep pace with modern aesthetics. The structure inside and outside of the tower had to remain unchanged, while all modern facilities and infrastructure had to be settled imperceptibly.

As the formation of the exterior spaces had to ensure minimum interference, the addition of a water surface area was adapted to the specific environment and respected the topography of the landscape, resulting in an even and unified set of buildings and space with intensity and character.

The Tainaron Blue Retreat offers you the quaint and unique experience of staying in a tower that comes from the past, with its traditional narrow stairs and wooden ladders. Its three vintage rooms, with unobstructed sea and mountain views, are equipped with beautiful Coco-mat linen and ecological O-live toiletries and are embellished with works of art created by sculptor Nikos Karalis.

Greek tradition provides us with extra tasty and healthy recipes which are easy and accompany a lot of evenings with a glass of wine or brunches with coffee
One not so famous but exquisite is Lalaggia or Tiganides from Mani in Greek peninsula of Peloponnese
Here is the recipe
Ingredients
1 glass fresh orange juice
½ glass olive oil
25gr cinnamon
15gr clove
Zest from 1 orange
Olive oil enough for the frying
2.5kg flour for all uses

Preparation
We take the yeast with a little bit flour and put the cinnamon and clove in the water for about 15 minutes. We strain the water and mix it with the orange juice. We rub the remaining flour with the olive oil and dissolve the yeast with the juice and the water from the cinnamon and clove, adding the orange zest that will give them a sense of freshness. The dough should be malleable. We make long paste cords and we wrap them around our hand before we put them in hot olive oil. As soon as they turn golden we place them on a platter laid with absorbent paper and serve with goat cheese or honey and cinnamon.
