Stepping inside felt like entering an elegantly preserved chapter of the city’s past, enriched with every modern luxury a traveler could desire. I felt an immediate connection to Monument Athens because it’s a place that makes you feel as though you’re both at home and on a remarkable journey through history. There’s an undeniable sense of grandeur here, yet the spaces are inviting, cozy, and personal. The nine rooms at Monument Athens are each beautifully unique, with high ceilings, vintage-inspired details, and luxurious comforts that speak to the hotel’s neoclassical heritage. The Muse was my personal favorite, featuring a welcoming veranda with serene views of the church. There’s also Acanthus, where the sunlight pours in and the painted ceiling seems to elevate the entire space, creating a sense of quiet grandeur. And for a truly romantic stay, Nidus in the attic provides a warm, intimate ambiance with a private jacuzzi and stunning views of the Acropolis.

Each room feels like a work of art, and every detail has been carefully selected to create a space where you can slow down, relax, and truly appreciate the beauty around you.

The wellness area at Monument Athens is one of its hidden treasures. Located on the lower level, this private spa offers a luxurious hammam and sauna for guests to enjoy at their leisure, as well as a massage room for personalized treatments. After a day exploring Athens, descending into this serene space felt like entering another world. It’s the perfect antidote to the lively pace of the city above—a quiet, intimate retreat dedicated to relaxation and renewal.

Ernst Ziller’s Timeless Influence: The Past and the Renovation

A highlight of Monument Athens is its connection to the iconic architect Ernst Ziller, who designed over 500 structures across Greece and helped shape the face of Athenian neoclassicism.

The hotel welcomes guests to experience history firsthand, inviting them to stay within a real architectural landmark and reflect on Athens’ glorious past in a novel and luxurious way. Originally constructed in 1881 by Efstathios Stathopoulos, a prominent merchant, this building served dual purposes: its ground floor housed shops, while the upper levels were dedicated to Stathopoulos’s private residence. Over the years, the building changed hands and purposes numerous times, and with its eventual abandonment, the lack of upkeep led to significant damage, from crumbling plasterwork to deteriorated walls and the gradual loss of its intricate interior decor.

When the time came to transform this Athenian treasure into Monument Athens, an extensive renovation was required to restore its historical beauty and adapt it to its new role in hospitality. The restoration team faced a monumental task, from redoing cracked and broken concrete elements to carefully restoring original ceiling paint and plasterwork. As both a preserved monument under the Ministry of Culture and an environmentally protected building, each step of the renovation had to meet strict standards and use precise craftsmanship techniques, making the process an intricate and lengthy journey.

The effort was truly a labor of love, and today, Monument Athens stands as a testament to both its past and a revived vision of hospitality. This historic gem has been lovingly returned to the people of Athens, accentuating its original charm while breathing new life into the neighborhood of Psyrri.

Nothing can compete with the experience offered by grande dame hotels, always housed in architecturally notable buildings and situated at the most stunning locations. It’s always huge news for all hotel lovers when one of them is given a new life!

Commanding a pristine setting on the shores of Lake Lucerne and with captivating views over the Swiss Alps, this iconic Belle Époque landmark has shone in the heart of Switzerland since 1906, established by eccentric Swiss hotelier Franz Josef Bucher After an extensive renovation, the Mandarin Oriental Palace, Lucerne is set to usher in an era of contemporary elegance and legendary service.  Embodying true serenity and a refined sense of contemporary luxury, it features 136 guest rooms, including 48 beautifully appointed suites. As well as four unique restaurants and bars managed by Executive Chef Gilad Peled, a culinary expert who has led multiple Michelin-starred restaurants. In addition, a rejuvenating wellness sanctuary spa offers guests soothing and holistic treatments. For entertaining and events, a 240-seat ballroom and additional meeting rooms have also been incorporated into the state-of-the-art redesign.

The renovation and the interior design has been curated by local architects “Iwan Bühler Architekten” and London interior designers “Jestico + Whiles”  who preserved the building’s rich history and heritage while infusing contemporary elements into the design. The faded Art Deco grandeur of the original interiors have been remixed with fresh bold ideas, while decorative features have been faithfully restored, including scagliola columns, chequerboard marble flooring and stucco-adorned walls. The hotel’s original colour palette, inspired by Bucher’s travels across the Mediterranean, has emerged from beneath layers of past alterations. Earthy terracottas, rich greens and chalk whites are incorporated into the newly renovated interiors, as palm and lily motifs nod to the stylised botanicals of the Art Deco era. By stitching new into old, uniting the traditional with the contemporary, the venerable Palace is ushered into a new era as a Mandarin Oriental.
