Sade Reportedly Recording New Music

R&B fans rejoice! Sade could be bringing us new music sometime soon.

According to Billboard, Sade has been recording new music at Miraval Studios in France. The studio has been recently reopened by producer Damien Quintard and actor Brad Pitt, who co-owns the Château Miraval property it’s located on.

“You could feel the love that she and the band had for this place,” Quintard said. “And when we talked to musicians who came here previously, they all have this special connection with Miraval that can’t really be explained…It’s a dream come true to see this place activate again.”

Sade hasn’t released a new album since 2010’s Soldier of Love, though they have featured on soundtracks to 2018’s A Wrinkle in Time and Widows.

There’s a lot of great R&B music happening right now, but if we’re being honest, none of it is Sade. There’s something different about the way Sade’s flawless vocals blend with the band to tell a captivating story. Every song feels like a private glimpse into an epic romance. Even during instrumental breaks, you can still feel the drama.

Per Pitchfork, back in 2018, band member Stuart Matthewman indicated the group had already written, “a bunch of songs” for its next album.

“[Sade’s] not interested in the fame or any of that [other] stuff. She likes to put out art,” Matthewman said at the time. “So when it’s ready, it will come out.”

At this point, we all know 2018 was several lifetimes ago, so we’re not surprised the music is just getting recorded. Sade usually makes us wait a long time between projects and it’s always worth it, so take your time, we’re ready whenever you are.

There have been a lot of arguments lately about the state of R&B, but if Sade is back with new music, those debates are over because they officially run R&B.

Amber Mark’s Exclusive New Music Video Is An Ode to Sade

When Amber Mark grew up listening to Sade, she never knew she’d one day be covering one of her songs for a music video. The 24-year-old artist got her start in 2016 after uploading her first song to Soundcloud and ending up on the iTunes homepage shortly after. Her debut EP, 3:33am dropped in 2017, and before she kicks off her tour this month, she’s got one more trick up her sleeve: a music video for “Love Is Stronger Than Pride,” made famous by Sade but given a modern twist by Mark.
“You want to make sure you’re still respecting the person who originally created the song,” she told me. You’d definitely recognize the song. Mark has a similarly slow and easy voice that stays true to the original while drawing in a 2018 audience with a few added synths and beats.

“We wanted to do something really simple, we didn’t want to do anything too detailed, mainly because we were really trying to just focus on the song,” Mark said. “We wanted something that was just me walking down the street of New York City…We went to Chinatown to shoot it and it was supposed to just kind of be a video of me contemplating what that song is about.”

Sade’s “Flower of the Universe” is here

Sade’s long-awaited contribution to A Wrinkle In Time’s soundtrack is here. It’s called “Flower of the Universe,” and it features production from No I.D., who previewed the track on his Twitter earlier today. The song fits neatly into the pantheon of Sade, a silkily ethereal and all-encompassing lullaby of sorts. Listen to it below.

“Flower of the Universe” is Sade’s first new song since 2010’s Soldier of Love. “I never thought she’d say yes, but asked anyway,” director Ava DuVernay said, regarding Sade’s appearance on the Wrinkle soundtrack. “She was kind + giving. A goddess. We began a journey together that I’ll never forget.”

Sade returns with new song for A Wrinkle in Time soundtrack

Reclusive soul icon Sade is returning to the spotlight with an original song for director Ava DuVernay’s fantasy film A Wrinkle in Time.

The Smooth Operator star hasn’t released any fresh material since sharing a cover of Thin Lizzy’s Still in Love With You for her 2011 compilation album, The Ultimate Collection, but on Tuesday (20Feb18), DuVernay revealed she had managed to persuade Sade to return to the studio for her new Disney project.

“I never thought she’d say yes, but asked anyway,” Ava wrote on Twitter. “She was kind + giving. A goddess. We began a journey together that I’ll never forget. Proud to announce that Sade has created an original song for WRINKLE IN TIME. It’s entitled ‘Flower of the Universe’. And it’s a dream come true.”

Pop star Sia has also contributed a new tune to the album. It was written especially for lead character Meg Murray, played onscreen by rising actress Storm Reid.

“Happy to share that WRINKLE IN TIME’s soundtrack also includes original music by none other than Sia,” Ava continued. “I remember being blown away by her SPEAKING VOICE ON THE PHONE. So when she shared the song she wrote for Meg, I was spellbound. It’s called ‘Magic’. And it is. Thank you, @Sia.”

The film will also boast songs from Beyonce’s protegees Chloe x Halle, Kehlani, and Demi Lovato and DJ Khaled, whose I Believe collaboration has been added to the soundtrack line-up.

After Demi expressed her excitement at the news, Ava responded by tweeting: “My hope was to gather dynamic women artists to craft a majestic soundtrack for Meg’s journey. Demi, thank you for ‘I BELIEVE.’ With our brother, @djkhaled, you made magic.”

A Wrinkle in Time, the big screen adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s popular children’s book, will star Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, and Mindy Kaling, and feature a score by Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi.

The highly-anticipated movie and accompanying soundtrack will be released in early March (18).

Ali Jamieson returns to Heavy Disco with London based soul singer Raff for this 2017 flip on the quiet storm classic The Sweetest Taboo originally recorded by Sade in 1985.

The EP is complete with an instrumental and pastiche Varorwave edit, because everything sound great slowed down. Ali is one third of Heavy Disco Records and have enlisted the assistance of some fantastic musicians for this cover, including label partner Hal Ritson, former bandmates David O’Neill and Oliver Jarvis, Brazil’s own Jadhiel Asaph and singer Raff, with whom he has collaborated many times.
