Kanye West’s first pair of Yeezys have sold for a price as outlandish as their creator.

The sample sneakers that introduced the rapper’s nascent fashion empire to the world back at the 2008 Grammys have sold for a record $1.8 million. Not only are the black leather high-tops the first pair of sneakers to break the $1 million barrier, they also sold for more than three times the previous high mark.

The “Grammy Worn” Nike Air Yeezy 1 Prototypes were sold to sneaker investment platform Rares via a private sale, according to the auction house. The $1.8 million price easily beats the previous record of $560,000, which was set by a pair of Nike Air Jordan 1s from 1985 that sold at auction last May. Before that, the title belonged to a pair of Nike Waffle Racing Flat “Moon Shoes” that sold for $437,500 in the fall of 2019.

This particular pair was designed by West and Mark Smith, and were worn by the rapper during a stirring performance of “Stronger” and “Hey Mama” at the 50th annual Grammys. The size-12 shoes feature a soft black leather upper, perforated details, tonal Nike swoosh, Yeezy forefoot strap and signature “Y” medallion lacelocks in bright pink. Although West and Nike would go on to collaborate on a handful of other sneakers, they parted ways in 2013, at which point the rapper teamed up with Adidas. That relationship has proven to be quite fruitful for both sides, with Yeezy going on to become a global fashion phenomenon that totaled $1.7 billion in sales last year.

“The sale speaks volumes of Kanye’s legacy as one of the most influential clothing and sneaker designers of our time, and of the Yeezy franchise he has built which has become an industry titan,” Brahm Wachter, the auction house’s head of Streetwear and Modern Collectibles, said in a statement.

After buying the shoes, Rares announced that it will split ownership of the shoe into shares which its users will be able to buy and trade on its marketplace. If all goes to plan, sneakerheads the world over will be able own a fraction of the record-shattering shoes come this June. Welcome to 2021.

Marni has dropped a brand new footwear piece from its eclectic Spring/Summer 2020 lineup. Following its recently unveiled black “GOOEY” sneaker, the Italian label has, conversely, opted for a crisp white, low-cut canvas shoe this time around.

Staring at the top of the silhouette is “Marni” branding over the tongue, complemented by tonal laces looped through sleek silver-toned eyelets. The rest of the uppers embody white canvas uppers, kept clean with thin tonal top-stitching along the edges and backstay. One of the only contrasting details is the pair of metallic vent holes placed at the medial side just above the midsole. Wrapping all around the top of the midsole is a squiggly red line that’s meant to resemble the silhouette’s foxing, matching the melted look of the uneven rubber. Furthermore, a “MARNI” logo that’s equally quirky is placed at the heel, offering an intricate hand-drawn look to the Italian-made sneakers.

after a five-year hiatus, Prada returned to the Resort schedule with a collection of sporty yet feminine, pastel-heavy looks. The show took place in Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a new exhibition space with zig-zagging wood floors that echoed the collection’s decidedly modern vibe. Models like Natalie Westling walked the runway in futuristic, soccer field-ready looks — tracksuits with poofy statement sleeves, skintight technical knits, jauntily cut zip-up jackets. Then came the would-be workwear: button-downs and shirtdresses with sheer pastel under- and overlays, off-the-shoulder midis featuring the brand’s patented feather-lined cuffs.

Marabou feathers weren’t the only Spring 2017 Prada obsession that carried over — printed sets, asymmetrical button closures, waist-cinching belts and high necklines also made an encore. Whimsical prints (courtesy of illustrator and frequent Prada collaborator James Jean) replaced geometric patterns on shift dresses, hook-ups and handbags.

Eye-grabbing, chainmail-inspired necklaces done in sequins adorned many a model’s neck, but the real post-show buzz centered on the label’s luxe new Velcro sneakers. (Those, and the feather-accented headbands that were half Ziegfeld girl, half something you’d expect to see at Coachella).

One final note: Per Miuccia Prada and Karl Lagerfeld, braids are the new top knots. Per Pat McGrath, minimal makeup with a statement lip is the way to do summer beauty.
