Cosmopolitan and welcoming, Spetses is a short hop from the unassuming port of Kosta on the mainland and its more glamourous neighbour Porto Heli. As the boat approaches, the white town with red rooves looms into view against a backdrop of pine trees. In front is the Posedonion Hotel, the oldest hotel on the Greek Islands, and the main harbour of the island, Dapia, which means Fortress.

Owing much of its architectural influence to its sometime Venetian overlords, thankfully protected by law from being replaced with high-rise modern buildings, the fine old houses of the interior can be glimpsed. Above Dapia rises Kastelli, the first major settlement of the island, and to the east, the sky is pierced by the bell tower of Agios Nikolaos.

The Old Harbour, Palio Limano, is hidden behind the lighthouse headland and it is here that the many bars and clubs that rock until dawn are to be found. Behind are narrow streets filled with chic boutiques, taverns, pebbled nautical mosaics and cool cafés that are a perfect place to stroll and while away the hours. Various roads out of town lead to the coast and the sun-drenched beaches while a path leads up to Profitis Ilias, the highest point on the island at 285 metres. The views are sublime across to the Peloponnese and on the opposite side of the Argolic Gulf to Leonido, and beneath your feet the green gem with turquoise shores that could only be Spetses.

Distinctive, with a bell tower of Tinian marble, the corpse of Paul Bonaporte, philhellenic nephew of Napoleon, was kept here in a barrel of rum for five years awaiting repatriation.

Anagyrios and Korgialenios School

Known as the inspiration for the school in The Magus by John Fowles where the author worked in the 1950’s, the institution was established in 1927 as an English-style boarding school for Greece’s wealthy elite. Today, the building hosts conference, seminars and summer schools and there is an amphitheatre within the grounds that hosts a series of performances in late June.

The school was just one of the many legacies of Sotiris Anagyrios who made his fortune in America. As well as a two-storey neoclassical mansion designed by Zizillas, he funded many projects including the building of an aqueduct, initiating a road-building programme and the construction of the Posedonion Grand. His greatest contribution, though, was buying up nearly half of the island which he had reforested with trees, and donated it to the island on the condition that it could never be built upon.

Laskarina Bouboulina was a heroine of the Greek revolution and is Spetses’ most famous daughter. After losing two husbands in pirate battles, she used her fortune to help the fight for Greek independence and sailed on a warship to blockade Napflio. Her exploits bought her fame and advanced the cause beyond Greece. Later, she was killed in an island feud after her son eloped with a girl betrothed to another.

The museum is housed in the 350 year old mansion of her second husband, Dimitris Bouboulis, a wealthy captain and shipowner. Bequeathed by a fourth generation descendant, personal items, weapons, antique charts and maps, books, furniture and portraits help to preserve the story of this extraordinary woman.

The most important festival on Spetses is Armata which is held at the beginning of September. Many cultural events and performances are held, culminating in a celebration of the naval battle of Spetses from September 8th 1822 where the outnumbered Greek forces prevented an attack on Napflio by the Turkish armada. A replica ship from the Ottoman fleet is built in the old harbour and, after a reenactment of the fight, it is exploded in a tremendous firework display which attracts many visitors to the islands.

The traditional shipyards, known as Karnagia from the Italian, have a long history on Spetses and still operate today. This merchant presence brought great wealth to the island, evidenced in the grandiose architecture of the traditional mansions known as Kapetonospita, Captain Houses. Hidden behind high walls to protect from piracy, the interiors were filled with furniture and objects from all over the world as the broadened horizons of the Captains gave them a cultured outlook.

Just a two-hour ferry ride away from Athens, the island of Spetses, with its picturesque old harbor, is a well-known destination for a fabulous weekend getaway. Spetses has an especially elegant atmosphere, mainly due to its many Venetian mansions, which bring to mind another place and time.

The scenic capital of the island, Spetses Town, is ideal for meandering, romantic walks, while there’s plentiful swimming and sunbathing to be enjoyed at the many beaches along its shores.

A selection of boutique hotels, sophisticated restaurants, and marinas filled with yachts from all over the world are just some of the more cosmopolitan attractions of this island.

When English novelist and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz first visited the town of Spetses, he described it as “charming, unlike anywhere I’ve visited in Greece, starting at ground level, with mosaics fashioned out of colored pebbles.”

Greece has any number of spectacular islands, but truly, this magical place is an ideal destination for those who feel like relaxing and unwinding close to — yet so far from — the Greek capital.

It’s time to get lost in the enchanting world of Spetses.

Archaeological excavations show that the first signs of human habitation on Spetses are from the Early Bronze Age; this is also called first Hellenic Era, which occurred about 2,500 BC.

The local population increased during the 15th century, with people coming from the Peloponnesian Peninsula. However they were unable to create permanent villages or towns there due to the frequent pirate attacks the island suffered.

Only beginning in the seventeenth century were the first real towns established on Spetses.

Once established, Spetses began to develop a strong maritime and trading tradition, which is still one of the trademarks of the island.

The sophisticated, cosmopolitan image of the island of Spetses was initially created by Sotiris Anargyros, a Spetsiot who became rich in America. He first used some of his money to build a road and a reservoir there, and also founded a prestigious private boarding school, the Anargyrios and Korgialeneios School, in 1927.

Anargyros then built the first luxury hotel on Spetses, the Posidonio Hotel, in 1914, and financed the conservation and reforestation program of the island’s pine forest.

Aside from the main beach in the town, which is lovely in itself, there are many other beaches on the island on which to enjoy a day in the sun with all the amenities. Transport to the beaches in Spetses is made easy by bus, or by boat from Dapia, the island’s new port.

All the beaches on Spetses are lovely and scenic, providing the perfect places for relaxing family vacations. You owe it to yourself to explore the best beaches on the island, four of which are listed below.

Spetses Town Beach

The beach here is centrally located, stretching all along the shoreline of the town. The road to the right of Dapia, the central part of the main town, leads to this area.
The beach has some sand, but it is mostly pebbled, and it has shallow green waters that are great for a relaxing swim.

Agia Paraskevi Beach

The stunning sandy beach of Agia Paraskevi is found in a sheltered cove on the western shore of the island.
The thick pine forest offers some shade on the beach, and one can enjoy water sports and the nearby snack bar. This quiet, lovely place can be reached either by road or by taxi boats, which make stops there.

Agia Marina Beach

Agia Marina is Spetses’ most popular beach. It has a gorgeous small pink and white chapel of the same name close by, which is surrounded by palm and cypress trees, as well as pines.
The beach consists of sand and pebbles and amenities include a variety of water sports, sun-beds, umbrellas, a beach bar and numerous tavernas near the water where you can enjoy fabulous Greek food.
Archaeological excavations have discovered evidence of ancient human settlement in Agia Marina, including ruins of a fortified wall, figurines, and clay vessels, which all date back to the Early Bronze Age.

Agioi Anargyri Beach

Agioi Anargyri aerial beach.
Agioi Anargiri is one of the largest and most developed beaches on Spetses. Situated in a lovely cove, it is a pebble-and-sand beach with especially deep waters, which make it perfect for water sports activities.

Apart from the beautiful beaches dotting the island of Spetses, what draws visitors to this island is its undeniable romantic charm. Therefore, a must do when visiting this scenic place is to take a romantic trip around the island in a horse-drawn carriage.

The old Harbor area of Spetses, called Baltiza, was an important shipbuilding center during the 18th and 19th century, and features lighthouses and museums for interested visitors today.

This interesting historical museum is located in the mansion once belonging to a local merchant who lived in the nineteenth century named Hatzigianni-Mexi. It includes items which portray the history of the island from ancient through modern times.

If you have been to Poseidonion Grand Hotel, you are a lucky traveller. And if you haven’t yet, you certainly have heard (and dreamt) about it. Spetses island’s iconic hotel combines an impressive facade with an even more impressive history and heartwarming (yet high-end) hospitality.

The Pine Estate -a new addition to the Poseidonion Grand Hotel family- is a breathtaking property with boundless beauty and seclusion only achievable through the voice of nature, in a private space that seems limitless. It’s set on a forested cape at the crest of the island, providing visitors the feeling that they are at the land’s end. Total autonomy is a gift in 6 acres of grounds, so spacious that they feel endless, in a microcosm that seems separate from the island of Spetses.

The olive trees glisten in the sunlight, among pines, palms, cypresses, native aromatics and eye-catching rock formations. Every spot in the Pine Estate of the Poseidonion is a new 360° panorama as the sea is the protagonist from dawn till dusk.

The views of Spetses, the Agia Marina bay, the islets of Spetsopoula, Trikeri and Agios Ioannis, even Hydra island in the background, unfold from around this secluded cape.A short stroll down the property’s footpath leads to a private beach, and guests can embark from here on a voyage to explore the coastline of the island. In addition, the traditional Agia Marina Chapel, which is attached to the property is ideal for a private mass.

Live a lavish lifestyle on the Argosaronic island of captains, kings and VIPs

The Armada, the Greek heroine Laskarina Bouboulina, the Old Port, the aristocratic ambience. This cosmopolitan island near Athens will make you want to return again and again. An ideal destination for a quick retreat all year round, Spetses has the ability to make you feel unique, special, exclusive. Enjoy a leisurely coffee in Dapia, taking in the view of Kosta and Porto Heli across the water.

Visit the Clock Tower Square, the well-kept captains’ mansions below Agios Nikolaos monastery, the boatyards, Bouboulina’s museum and the Mansion of Hatzigianni-Mexi. Experience the ambience of the legendary Poseidon building, which has hosted royalty, politicians and VIPs. Horse-drawn carriages, bicycles and walking will be your only modes of transportation. This island has forever been a favourite destination for high society, as reflected in the smart cafes, art stores and stylish boutiques that populate the Old Port. Luxury and local tradition coexist on this beautiful island.

What to do on Spetses
Aristocratic ambience
Since the use of cars is restricted on the island, horse and carriage remains the preferred mode of transport. Live like the luminaries and nobility that arrived in this manner at the world-renowned Poseidon hotel. Take a romantic evening ride in any of the 33 horse and buggies that still exist on the island, passing the picturesque Old Port, Agios Nikolaos and Dapia.

Local legends
Admire the local architecture: neoclassical captains’ homes and cannons from the revolution of 1821. This island is steeped in 5,000 years of rich history, and locals are eager to tell the tales of their nautical victories and local heroes. Archaeological finds on the island date back to 3,000 B.C. Don’t miss the Bouboulina Museum, where a plethora of her personal items is on display. The Mansion of Hatzigianni Mexi (the first governor of Spetses) is another must-see, as it’s one of the most spectacular stately homes.

A swanky scene
There is no end to the festivities in the cosmopolitan neighbourhood of the Old Port, where the rich rub shoulders with the locals. Here wealthy Athenians moor their yachts, and socialise with their international neighbours. Candlelit tables, jetties and romantic terraces, gourmet dining and fine wine, soft music and lively conversation. As the evening progresses, there are plenty of bars and clubs to choose from, promising stylish holidays on this lively island in the Argosaronic.

The magic of Spetses
Wander around the neighbourhood of Kounoupitsas and don’t miss the legendary Anargirio and Korgialenio School. Take a stroll in its well-tended gardens and admire the beautiful neoclassical buildings on this side of the island. Did you know that among the English teachers that taught here was the award-winning writer John Fowles, creator of The Magus, based partly on his experiences on the island?

See you at The Armata!
Thousands of visitors descend upon the island to experience the annual Armata – a week-long celebration (starting September 8), in honour of the naval victories of Spetses, Hydra and Psara against the Turks in 1822. In addition to the impressive fireworks and religious rituals, it is a week filled to the brim with cultural happenings, feasting and festivities.

Hidden gems of Spetses
The old boatyards
Did you know that Spetses was the second biggest shipping centre in Greece? In the heart of the Old Port, the sight of old boatyards is sure to impress you. You can still watch the builders practise their craft in time-honoured fashion. At the end of your stroll around the old boatyards, under the lighthouse, you’ll find the sculptures of Natalia Mela, gazing out at the Argosaronic.

The benefactor
The name Sotirios Anargyros means a lot to the locals of Spetses, since he is the one that financed, among other things, the building of the historical Poseidon. His house is located behind Dapia. Built in 1904, it is one of the most beautiful neoclassical homes in Greece.

The beaches
Agia Marina, Kouzounos, Ksilokeriza, Vrelos, Scholes, Zogeria … crystal-clear waters, secluded beaches with pebbles and sand, shaded by pines, are all just walking distance away. And at the beach of Agio Arnargyros, you’ll discover Bekiris Cave, one of the island’s most beautiful natural attractions.

On this elegant isle, you will find the blue-green waters of the Saronic Gulf meeting pine forests that stretch down to the water’s edge. Its rich history, in part as the home of wealthy shipowners who played a key role in the Greek War of Independence, is evident in the grand architecture of its aristocratic villas in the main town.

This history also wonderfully informs a number of unique events on the island from the springtime Tweed Run organized by the historic Poseidonion Grand Hotel to the Armata in September (commemorating a famous naval battle with fireworks) to the Classic Yacht Regatta which sees beautiful classic sailboats going head to head.

The Spetses Yacht Club also organizes sailing lessons for children – both those on the island as well as special programs for those visiting the island in the summer. Meanwhile for those who enjoy the challenge of endurance races, the island also hosts the Spetses mini marathon and the Spetsathlon. Accessible by car from Athens (about a 3hr drive) and a popular getaway for Athenians, the island has plenty of life from April through October.
