The xx tour continues, in fact they have not stopped playing since February that began their tour, each time perfecting their spectacular set. A couple of months ago, a Jamie xx set heard a special version of “On Hold”. Here is the finished version, which transforms the single, in an entire ceremony. Will they take the Mercury Prize? Classically-trained French artist Petit Biscuit’s highly anticipated debut album, Presence, is set for release November 10, the day of his 18th birthday. The first single from the forthcoming release, “Waterfall” featuring Panama, premieres today—listen here. Preorder the album here.

Recorded over the course of the past year, Petit Biscuit—a.k.a. Mehdi Benjelloun—wrote, produced and mixed Presence completely independently, finding time between high school exams and sold out tours across the U.S., Europe and beyond. The album is his complete creative vision, and includes contributions from Lido, Bipolar Sunshine and the aforementioned Panama. The album was mastered by legendary engineer Chab (Daft Punk, Air, Sebastien Tellier) in a nod to the forefathers of French dance music.

Presence is the first new music from Petit Biscuit (\pə.ti bis.kɥi\) since the release of his debut EP featuring smash hit “Sunset Lover,” released in 2015 when he was only 15 and streamed more than 350 million times to date.

The new album caps off a whirlwind year for the 17-year-old producer, who has played this year to sold-out crowds at New York’s Brooklyn Steel, Los Angeles’ The Novo, San Francisco’s The Warfield, Washington, D.C.’s 9:30 Club, Denver’s Gothic Theatre and more in addition to festival plays and headline dates across his native Europe. Petit Biscuit will return to the U.S. for select dates this winter, with stops in Seattle, Boston and Chicago.

A classically trained musician from a young age, Petit Biscuit plays piano, guitar, cello and more, and began experimenting with electronics to form his signature sound at age 11. Presence is heavily informed by his schooling, combining acoustic elements with innovative electronic production and his trademark vocal manipulations.

The visuals certainly paint a romantic picture of the band’s youth growing up in Southwest London. “We wanted to celebrate our home town and revisit some of the places that remind us of our friendship when we were growing up,” the xx said. “We’re so happy to be back home and so excited to begin our Night + Day residency in Brixton this week!”

‘On Hold’ has been one of my top played tracks since it’s release late last year. A smooth combination of layered vocals with the funky electronics of Jamie XX, this one was a hit.

The more creative combinations of sounds the band have been experimenting with are most evident in ‘Dangerous’ with percussion, bass, trumpets and voice making an unlikely quartet.

‘I Dare You’ drew back to the earlier work from The xx that I enjoyed so much. The full sound and steady beat build up to an anthemic conclusion to be a song with power and weight. ‘Lips’ takes it back to a slower, sexier mood.

Where most of the album has been dominated by the female vocalist, ‘A Violent Noise’ is refreshing. Unfortunately this song essentially goes nowhere, failing to build to the conclusion that feels promised. ‘Replica’ is more relaxed, easy listening with fuller instrumentals.

‘Performance’ was my favourite track on this album. Dark, pleading and emotional, I got a bit of a Dido vibe.

The xx has always been a strong act and their third album has been no exception. Their sound has grown and their music has developed. Although there were only three songs on the album that I really enjoyed as standalone tracks, the entire album is good background music.
