After decades of returning to Santorini, I thought I had seen every version of the island worth seeing. Then I stayed in Finikia, a village I had never visited, inside a hotel that turned out to be just as unexpected as the place around it.

I have been coming to Santorini since the 90s. The caldera left me speechless the very first time I saw it, and so did something else: the crush of people in the narrow streets of Fira, long before overtourism became a word every destination had to reckon with. Even back then, Santorini had queues to turn a corner, crowds rushing toward the sunset in Oia. Over the years I kept coming back, and I got to know its villages, its wineries, its beaches, each one distinct in its own right, each one a small proof that the Cyclades never quite repeat themselves. This time, though, I found something new. Proof, if I needed it, that this island still has not run out of surprises.

I stayed in Finikia, a village I had never set foot in before, and it turned out to be unlike anywhere else on Santorini. A miniature town that feels like a three-dimensional puzzle built for a child, all little houses, caves, and canavas woven together.

Canavas are the underground spaces carved straight into the volcanic rock, once used as wine presses and cellars, the same technique that shaped so much of the island’s older architecture. Finikia has been inhabited since 1832, and it still carries that history in every wall.

A Village That Pulls You In

Inside this hidden gem of a village sits a hidden gem of a hotel: Neema Maison. It is a collection of houses and rooms, balconies, domes, courtyards, and gardens, with as much character as the village that surrounds it. Finikia is car-free and crowd-free, and it has an atmosphere that makes you feel like you are living somewhere else entirely, somewhere slower.

Across from the hotel, I could see old caves that had become homes: a small villa, a grandmother hanging out her washing, a man hosing down his courtyard. The colors were everything I could ask for, ochre and pastel and a deep red, with whitewashed Cycladic houses and the sea beyond. Traveling with your eyes alone, in a place like this, is its own kind of pleasure.

Inside the hotel, that same pleasure continues. Urban Soul Project, the architects behind Neema, have done something remarkable. The first thing they built was a scene: the pool, with a bottom full of shapes, set against the backdrop of Finikia’s own church, red awnings marking the space, red details appearing again and again, a palette that fits the village around it perfectly. The rooms are domed, high-ceilinged, and spacious, nothing like the tighter, more enclosed cave rooms you find elsewhere on the island, in Oia especially. Every balcony opens onto the horizon, and design details are everywhere you look. The touch of Domes Resorts runs through the whole property, in the space itself and in the hospitality it offers.

Getting Lost, on Purpose

The next morning began with a walk into the maze-like, miniature labyrinth of Finikia itself. The kind of walk where you simply move through it, noticing the shapes of the houses, the weight of time, the layers left behind by years and by the people who have lived here. I climbed all the way to the highest point of the village, then made my way back down, where breakfast was waiting on the viewpoint.

Breakfast at Neema is really an extension of Antonino’s, the hotel’s own restaurant and the Italian concept that runs through several Domes properties. Eggs, fruit, yogurt, whatever you want, however you want it, laid out either on your own private balcony or on the terrace, with the view doing half the work. One morning I had it up at the viewpoint itself, the whole spread in front of that panorama of the village and the sea.

Lunch was back at the hotel too, by the pool: a Greek salad with a small twist, pickled onions instead of raw, and feta grilled rather than served plain, since the kitchen already knew my personal preference without having to ask. I spent the hours that followed on a sun lounger, book in hand, watching the pool area shift character as the light changed with the turning of the day.

An Evening With the Domes Family

One evening we ate at Maitr & Margarita, the acclaimed restaurant by a chef duo from Thessaloniki, set inside Novos Santorini, Neema’s sister property. Great food, a live singer, and a table facing the sunset made for one of the standout nights of the trip.

Together, these three hotels give you a genuinely multi-layered experience of the island, and you get to build it however you like. Stay at one, eat at another, take in the caldera view at the third. It is the kind of flexibility that only makes sense when a group runs properties with such distinct personalities, rather than three versions of the same hotel.

Back at Neema

The stay wound down the way it should: an afternoon siesta in the room at Neema, breakfast and a book on the balcony, and dinner back at Antonino’s, with Italian pasta and pinsa closing out the trip exactly as it began, unhurried, and entirely on Finikia’s own terms.

Neema Maison is part of the Domes Resorts family, alongside sister properties Novos Santorini and Helestia, and it shows in the level of design and service throughout the stay. But what will stay with me longer than any single detail is Finikia itself: a village that has quietly existed since 1832, two kilometers from the crowds of Oia, still going about its own life, largely undisturbed. After thirty years of visiting this island, I did not expect to find a version of it that still felt entirely new. Finikia gave me exactly that, and Neema gave me the best possible way to see it.

In the end, this hotel is a small diamond for anyone who wants to be transported into another, smaller universe, one with real atmosphere and real character, for those who are not looking for the obvious, but for an actual experience.

With just 16 suites, Neema Maison was the first opening under The Finds, Domes’ boutique-led collection focused on place, pace, and character. Its arrival followed the group’s larger 2024 debut on the island, Domes Novos Santorini, signalling a parallel strategy that favours intimacy and local immersion over spectacle.

Design & Atmosphere

Carved into Santorini’s volcanic rock, the hotel draws from Cycladic architectural principles while adopting a distinctly contemporary interior language. The design concept, developed by Greek studio Urban Soul Project, takes its cues from the world of fashion ateliers rather than conventional resort typologies, aligning the property with design-led hotels in Greece.

Whitewashed walls and textured neutrals form a restrained base, punctuated by a recurring deep red accent that appears in bespoke furniture, upholstery, and lighting details. Vanity-style illumination, sculptural forms, and curated fashion elements in the reception area give the spaces a sense of intentional staging, more maison than hotel.

The name “Neema,” derived from the ancient Greek word for thread, informs the visual narrative throughout the property, with an emphasis on line, continuity, and craftsmanship. The overall mood is quietly expressive and design-literate, without leaning into nostalgia or overt Cycladic clichés.

The Experience

Most suites offer sea views and include fully equipped kitchens, reinforcing the hotel’s appeal for extended stays rather than short, itinerary-driven visits. Three premium suites feature in-room jacuzzis, while shared spaces are limited and carefully considered.

The outdoor pool terrace functions as the social centre of the property, oriented toward sunset views and anchored by a communal table designed for informal gatherings. Dining is centred on Antonino’s, Domes’ Italian restaurant concept, serving handmade pasta, wood-fired pizzas, and seasonal dishes alongside a focused wine and cocktail list. A poolside bar extends the setting into the afternoon and early evening.

Wellbeing is integrated quietly into the rhythm of the stay, with outdoor yoga and Pilates sessions offered on the terrace and massage treatments available on request. Beyond the hotel, Finikia’s pedestrian lanes, family-run cafés, wine cellars, and workshops offer an unfiltered counterpoint to Santorini’s more choreographed experiences.

What makes a hotel experience truly extraordinary? Is it the luxurious amenities, the breathtaking views, or the impeccable service? My weekend journey to Vedema in Santorini became an unforgettable experience, as I had the privilege of sharing an amazing day with Kalia Konstantinidou. Alongside her husband Antonis Iliopoulos, they form the power couple behind the Empiria Group, the renowned hospitality brand in Greece that owns Vedema Resort. Engaging in conversation with dedicated hoteliers like Kalia is always a fascinating delight for me, as their passion and insight add unparalleled depth to the entire experience.

A Table Set for Revelations

Nestled within the Alati Restaurant of Vedema Resort, housed in a 400-year-old winery cave, I found myself seated at a table adorned with elegance and charm. It was in this enchanting setting that Kalia began to weave narratives from the glorious past of Vedema Hotel, which became the first 5-star hotel to open in Santorini in the early 90s.

Located in the medieval village of Megalochori in Santorini, Vedema seamlessly integrates into the fabric of the village, embodying its charm and embracing its spirit. The hotel becomes a natural extension of picturesque Megalochori, offering a harmonious fusion of local tradition and world-class hospitality.

The launch of the hotel was indeed a glamorous affair, attracting a distinguished VIP crowd. However, it was elevated to even greater heights by the presence of Aliki Vougiouklaki, Greece’s most legendary actress. With her radiance and undeniable charm, she added an extra touch of allure and prestige to the opening events. The combination of esteemed guests and the iconic presence of Aliki Vougiouklaki truly made the opening a memorable occasion.

Kalia’s narrative took on an enchanting turn as she recounted encounters with international stars who sought solace within Vedema’s tranquil embrace. Angelina Jolie, while immersing herself in the role of Lara Croft, found respite within these walls. Lady Gaga, known for her flamboyance, also discovered a haven of serenity in the Presidential Villa of Vedema.

How it started, how it’s going!

The estate’s foundation lay in a vineyard with a history spanning over five centuries. This connection to the land has been evident in every aspect of the hotel, starting from its name, “Vedema”, which is the Venetian translation for “harvest”.

The first interior designer of Vedema was Yiannis Tseklenis, also a legend of Greek design with an international career, a true multi-talented genius! The 2019 interior renovation became a testament to the dedication of its visionary owners. Antique island-style furniture, adorned in pristine sugar-white hues and spacious Cycladic bathrooms offered a visual symphony of tradition and contemporary elegance. Every detail, meticulously chosen, invited guests to immerse themselves in luxury and timeless charm.

Gastronomy at Vedema

Vedema Hotel’s gastronomy is a celebration of Santorini’s local produce and Mediterranean climate.

Alati, which means “salt” in Greek, has evolved from the 400-year-old winery cave, made from distinctive stone walls that give the restaurant a captivating atmosphere. Indoor or terrace dining showcases the creative menu by renowned French Chef Olivier Campanha, who is inspired by the land of nearby islands and the surrounding sea to give guests a refined taste adventure. Pergola provides a poolside breakfast experience, while the adjacent Pool Bar serves refreshing beverages. Canava Wine Bar, located in the centuries-old winery, offers wine tastings with an in-house expert. Circe Bar & Restaurant by the new pool offers a variety of beverages and delectable lunch options.

]]> The Planet D, an award-winning travel blog, has recently published a list of the 18 Most Beautiful Mediterranean Islands to Visit in 2023, which includes Santorini, Corfu, Zakynthos, Rhodes, Milos, Folegandros, Lefkada, and Naxos.

The list included eight Greek islands, which received the highest number of mentions among Mediterranean countries. Spain came in second with three mentions.

According to the latest rankings, Santorini in Greece has secured the second spot for the Most Beautiful Mediterranean Island to Visit in 2023, with Mallorca taking the top position.

Corfu is a significant island in the Mediterranean. The Greek island is off the west coast of the beautiful mainland. Both cruise lines and airlines flock to Corfu – it’s a popular spot amongst all. Busy and unapologetically a channel for passing tourists, Corfu has a constant movement of people. An easy fix to that, though, is visiting in shoulder seasons. In shoulder seasons, markets and attractions are much quieter, and the spring or autumn salty breeze keeps you cooler anyway.

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean. Officially a republic in its own right, the picturesque island is full of gorgeous beaches and vibrant nightlife. Whether you stay on the north coast or the south, you’ll experience Greek or Turkish culture. Most visitors choose one of the other as a hard border is in the middle of the island. But you could always combine the two if you have time.

10. Zakynthos, Greece

Zakynthos (aka Zante) is one of Greece’s most popular islands. The island is revered by partiers and those wanting a classic Greek island escape. When you aren’t partying, there is the dramatic Shipwreck Beach to discover, plus white sand beaches and baby turtles. It encapsulates all the benefits of a brilliant Mediterranean island. 11. Rhodes, Greece

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese – the Greek islands off the coast of Turkey. This Mediterranean island is packed with history and is heaven for anyone wanting to jump between ancient ruins in between beach days. In fact, its history is what caught our eye (and UNESCO’s since its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Rhodes also has a fascinating history of occupation, and the Ottomans and Italians have put their stamp on its cultural makeup.

14. Milos, Greece

Milos is another Mediterranean island with sheer white cliffs. Except it also has moonlike landscapes- which is why we’ve added it to this guide. The volcanic island is situated off the east coast of Greece and has striking geographical features. It has also built an impressive reputation as a party spot, considering it is one of Greece’s lesser-known islands.

15. Folegandros, Greece

Folegandros is a tiny Greek island. Forget the crowds and major tourist attractions. This Mediterranean island is somewhere to unwind. The miniature ‘capital’ (picture a small town) is full of white-washed buildings. It clings beautifully to the blue waters of the coastline. With some medieval history to investigate, Folegandros is a Mediterranean island on your bucket list. It might be small, but it packs a punch, which impressed us.

16. Lefkada, Greece

Lefkada is a beautiful Mediterranean island in the Ionian Sea. Technically, it is connected to the Greek mainland, but only by a manmade causeway. So for the sake of this guide (and Lefkada’s dramatic cliffs and blue waters), we had to include it. It is accessible from mainland Greece and is one of the most pretty Greek islands. The limestone cliffs are like Zante’s Shipwreck Beach – just minus the crowds.

18. Naxos, Greece

Naxos may be the largest of the Cyclades islands in the Mediterranean. However, size doesn’t correlate with popularity here; Naxos isn’t the most popular of the Greek islands. We have no idea why because it is stunning. It’s turquoise bays and golden sand do make it a sought-after beach destination for those in the know. And its capital, Chora, is a picturesque historic base full of iconic white cube-shaped houses. For us, the beaches and laidback vibe are major selling points.
