There are few attendees as well equipped to deliver a meaningful mother-daughter moment on the Met Gala red carpet as Kate and Lila Moss. While walking the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Mosses wore Fendi couture gowns by Kim Jones – and, of course, stepped out on the arm of the designer himself.

As with so many of the night’s looks, their gowns served as a subtle homage to Karl Lagerfeld, whose work is celebrated in this year’s exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” – and who served as the creative director of Fendi from 1965 all the way up to his death in 2019. In this case, the designs quietly referenced Lagerfeld’s abiding love of pastels and his eye for a feminine flourish.

For Lila’s look, Jones worked with marabou feathers treated to appear as fur, creating voluminous upper and lower sections artfully joined by a sheer netted bustier panel at the centre featuring delicate silk embroidery. Kate, meanwhile, went for a fresh take on one of her style signatures – the lacy slip dress – topped with detachable silk georgette sleeves as a final, feather-light touch.
