The elevator pitch:
Those who have previously travelled to the Maldives may be familiar with Six Senses Laamu, which opened 12 years ago on Olhuveli Island in the Laamu Atoll. Surrounded by impressive and biologically diverse coral reefs, it is a preferred resort for diving and snorkelling enthusiasts. With a dedicated team of no fewer than 10 passionate marine biologists, a sea hub committed to environmental education, and a collaborative marine conservation initiative with local NGOs, it is truly unique. The love for the ocean runs deep in the Laamu resort, with the original general manager, Marteyne, having completed over 3,000 dives herself.

As of this autumn, and building on the success of Laamu, the Maldives now has two hotels within the Six Senses portfolio, with the eco-focused group taking over Kanuhura Island in the Lhaviyani Atoll. This offers a considerably different and more contemporary experience than its sister property. In alignment with the brand’s ethos and sustainability efforts, existing structures were repurposed, while 13 new ultra-luxurious one and two-bedroom villas and an entirely new pool and restaurant area were constructed on an island known for having some of the most impressive beaches in the Maldives. What’s more? Guests at Six Senses Kanuhura have access to not one but two breathtaking additional private islands.

What’s the aesthetic?
With one of the largest and most beautiful white sand beaches in the region, Kanuhura Island is a true paradise, complete with interiors inspired by the vivid colours and textures of the surrounding landscape. Guests can navigate the lush island by bicycle; everyone receives their own bike on arrival, complete with a personalised wooden tag – of course.

And how are the rooms?

Whether you’re staying in one of the overwater villas or opt for beachfront rooms, you’re guaranteed stunning views. Given the size of the island, the accommodation is nicely spread out, too, making true relaxation just that little bit easier. For the ultimate luxurious experience, guests should book one of the Beach Retreats or the Beach Reserve, all designed and created in collaboration with eco.id architects. With three bedrooms and an impressive 64-square-metre private pool, the latter is the true crown jewel of Kanuhura.

Describe the crowd.
Those with a heightened awareness of the climate crisis will find like-minded individuals here. Dedicated sustainability officer Jacqueline educates guests about the many ways in which the resort is helping to protect local flora and fauna, while the incredibly friendly and professional staff, most of whom reside in the island’s host village, are very much part of the crowd, eschewing name tags in order to encourage conversation and personal interactions with visitors.

What’s for dinner?

With five restaurants and a dedicated ice-cream parlour, there are plenty of options to choose from. However, perhaps the most special dining experience the resort offers is a private barbecue dinner on the beach. Surrounded by candles, guests are guaranteed a magical evening while enjoying a menu tailored to their preferences by executive chef Ruwan Nalindra, with star dishes including fresh grilled lobster and local mahi mahi.

And where should I go to unwind?

Head to the spa, where expert therapists offer a range of classic treatments, from deep-tissue massages to manicures, as well as a dedicated biohacking lounge. Not fully relaxed yet? The very best way to clear your mind, as the teams at Six Senses Kanuhura will tell you, is to head into the ocean. Embark on a snorkelling adventure to Kuredu Caves, where you can spot Green and Hawksbill turtles, or go diving to observe Grey Reef sharks.

Inspiring Travel offers a seven-night stay at Six Senses Kanuhura from £4,019 per person based on two sharing a Beach Villa on a half-board basis, including return flights from London and private transfers.
