Discover the stunning sustainable Christmas trees 2024 at The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon & Ginza, designed by Kengo Kuma. Explore their transformation into bespoke furniture supporting Make-A-Wish Japan

As a devoted hotel lover and a journalist specializing in the world of luxury, I look forward to this time of year with excitement. Every holiday season, we at The Hotel Trotter embark on a mission to uncover the most breathtaking and innovative Christmas trees in hotels across the globe. This year, our spotlight shines brightly on The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon and The Tokyo EDITION, Ginza, where the magic of architecture and sustainability blend seamlessly into two extraordinary festive installations.

A Visionary Collaboration: Kengo Kuma and Karimoku Furniture

Renowned architect Kengo Kuma, the creative force behind both EDITION properties in Tokyo, has redefined the concept of a Christmas tree for 2024. His designs for the KIGUMI and KOMOREBI trees are not merely decorative but serve as profound statements of renewal, sustainability, and artistry. With the expertise of Karimoku Furniture, a leader in Japanese craftsmanship, these installations transform from festive displays into bespoke furniture pieces destined to last a lifetime.

The philosophy underpinning these trees is deeply inspiring. After their time gracing the lobbies of these prestigious hotels, they will embark on a second life as one-of-a-kind furniture, embodying a commitment to ecological harmony and design excellence. Part of this journey includes an auction, with proceeds supporting Make-A-Wish Japan to fulfill the dreams of children with incurable illnesses.

The Christmas Trees: A Tale of Two Masterpieces

KIGUMI – “Woven Wood” | The Tokyo EDITION, Ginza
In the heart of Ginza, a district where tradition meets modernity, the KIGUMI tree dazzles as a structural marvel. Its silver and bronze hues complement the jewelry-box-inspired design of the lobby. Crafted from six types of wood, including oak, Japanese maple, and North American walnut, it showcases the beauty of Japan’s rich natural resources.

On Display: November 19 – December 25, 2024
Location: Lobby Bar, 1F, 2-8-13 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo

KOMOREBI – “Sunlight Through Leaves” | The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon
In the vibrant and ever-evolving district of Toranomon, the KOMOREBI tree celebrates the serenity of a sunlit forest. Circular motifs and innovative use of smaller, underutilized woods demonstrate the seamless integration of sustainability and elegance.

On Display: November 20 – December 26, 2024
Location: Lobby Bar, 31F, 4-1-1 Toranomon, Minato-ku, Tokyo

Furniture with a Story
After the festive season, these trees will be meticulously reimagined as the KIGUMI Desk and KOMOREBI Table, available in both standard and masterpiece editions. Each piece will bear the unique narrative of the tree’s origins, connecting buyers to the forests from which the wood was sourced.

Sales Begin: December 5, 2024
Auction Period: December 5, 2024 – January 31, 2025
Prices: Starting at ¥220,000 for the KIGUMI Desk and ¥286,000 for the KOMOREBI Table
Part of the proceeds from the masterpiece editions will be donated to Make-A-Wish Japan, adding a philanthropic dimension to this celebration of sustainable design.

A Testament to Thoughtful Luxury

The Tokyo EDITION properties have elevated the festive experience to an art form, where tradition, innovation, and sustainability converge. These Christmas trees are not just a feast for the eyes but also a beacon of responsible luxury, resonating with the values of today’s discerning travelers.

As the holiday season unfolds, these installations remind us of the importance of giving back and embracing design that transcends mere aesthetics. If you’re in Tokyo, make time to visit these remarkable creations—it’s a festive experience you won’t forget.
