Hôtel de Crillon

 

Give me the lowdown: In a city renowned for luxury, you have to go some to stand out from the crowd. Overlooking the Place de la Concorde, Hôtel de Crillon is a palace hotel suffused with sophistication, merging all the historic architectural detail of a landmark property with a quietly confident display of interior-design grandeur. Louis IV commissioned the structure’s build in 1758 and it formed the Count de Crillon’s residence until 1909 when it opened as a hotel. Now part of the Rosewood Hotels & Resorts stable, it relaunched in its current guise in 2017 following a four-year renovation.

What are the rooms like? Warm and inviting, the rooms, suites and signature suites – 124 in total – evoke a sense of timeless elegance with all the charm you’d expect of a Parisian residence. The perfect balance of modern heritage, fine antiques and homely objets d’art and coffee table books stud the space, with calming neutral colourways, giant beds, marble bathrooms and parquet flooring. The sweeping penthouse-style Les Grands Appartements was designed by fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld, with opulent touchpoint such as dramatic chandeliers, carved doors and a lavishly draped bed. Meanwhile, the Suite Jardin is a more modern affair with clean lines, contemporary art and bolts of colour. Suite Louis XV offers views of the Eiffel Tower and Grand Palais.

Wining and dining: From Michelin stars and new-wave brassiere fare and top-notch patisserie and contemporary cocktails, this slick city pad has all vases covered. Headed up by chef Boris Campanella, L’Ecrin offers a multi-course tasting menu of innovative French-leaning cuisine, which, in a twist to the norm is crafted around your choice of wine, with awarding-winning sommelier Xavier Thuizat overseeing the stellar list. This year saw the arrival of Nonos and Comestibles – both courtesy of notable chef Paul Pairet (of Utlraviolet, Shanghai fame). The former is a lively bistro-style grill spot heroing retro and classic dishes. The latter, an easy-going deli serving seafood, charcuterie and cheeses. Meanwhile, the heritage-listed painted ceiling of ebullient Bar Les Ambassadeurs belies the contemporary edge to the cocktails that emerge.

A note on the spa: A newly-created swimming pool – featuring gold scalloped tiles and surrounded by comfy armchairs and loungers – completes the wellbeing space. Alongside massages and facials – using Sisley and Maison Caulières products – holistic and innovative treatments offered include jet peels and naturopathy sessions.
