A pair of historic Kiev buildings were united to create BURSA – a 33-room hotel that embraces the Bauhaus’ signature clean lines.
The Podil bolthole was designed by local studio Balbek Bureau for entrepreneur Vasily Grogol and includes an art gallery, restaurant and rooftop bar. Each is decked in a muted colour scheme that offers the odd flash of colour.
Rooms start from around $118 per night and furniture and lighting are restrained and free of fussy details, as not to detract from the hotel’s impressive 200-year-old structure.
The practice retained much of the original buildings’ fabric, with straight lines and geometric shapes appearing against the bare brick walls and exposed pipework of BURSA’s interiors.
There are touches of warmth in the Kiev hotel’s restaurant, Beliy Shum, where diners sit on flea market furniture that’s been carefully restored.
